Choosing Online Poker Tournaments To Play In
There are many people playing online poker, these days. In fact, there are more and more poker websites popping up all the time. Almost all of them offer cash games, heads up tables, single-table games and multi-player Poker Games. If you're new to the online poker world, you should know that some of the favorite games online are tournament-style games.
There are many different tournament-style games out there. Some of the most popular include the sit and go games and the multi-table games.
Multi-Table Freerolls:
Multi-table tournament games are generally scheduled well ahead of time. The officials set a starting time and, sometimes, a minimum and maximum number of allowable entrants. Then, based on how many players pay to enter, the prize pool grows and is distributed to the top winners. A portion of each player's entry fee goes towards the prize pool.
The exception to that rule is the freeroll tournament. Freerolls are very popular online because they are free to enter, but they fill up fast. The prize pool for each freeroll is usually provided by a sponsor of the website or by the website owners themselves. Occasionally, freeroll winners or top finishers win entry into a bigger tournament. That is known as playing satellite tournaments to get into larger tournaments.
Sit And Go Tournament Styles:
There are also sit and go tournament styles. Those are tournaments that only consist of a single table of players, usually. Although that table can have any number of players up to 10 or so, the usual number is somewhere between 8 and 10.
Sit and go tournaments are not really scheduled. Most poker websites run them on a constant basis. All you have to do is click to sit at the table. You'll be assigned a random seat and, when all seats are filled, the tournament will start. As long as you play on a popular website with lots of traffic, that should be within a few minutes.
The advantage of a sit and go tournament is that it's very fast-paced. You can sit down to play one and finish up within an hour or two. So, if you don't have time to play a multi-table tournament format, sit and go tournaments might be a better choice.
The disadvantage of sit and go tournaments is that the prizes tend to be much smaller than those in multi-table tournaments. So, it will take a lot longer to win large amounts of money. However, it will be fun and it will help you hone your skills. Also, as in most multi-player tournaments, you don't have to be the winner to get a share of the prize. Usually, the top three sit and go finishers win some share of prize money.
The Best Tournaments:
There is no right answer, as far as what the best tournaments are. It's all about which tournaments you enjoy more, have time to play or do best at. So, if you're new to the online tournament scene, try a little of everything, at low limits, of course. That way, you'll learn which play styles suit you best.
